Did you know that every business has a "Sugar Dish"? I didn't either until an unexpected lunch meeting five years ago.
Let me take you to that day. I was in my past employers office in downtown Lexington, VA. when my manager and his assistant said we were waiting on a special lunch guest. When Mr. Randle walked in right away I realized he is who we were waiting on. After introductions he said "Let's go eat" As we walked up the street I noticed Mr. Randle looking into the cafe windows and saying "Nope, Nope, Oh yeah, let's eat here".
After we ordered, we asked him what he was doing and why did he pick this particular restaurant without even looking at what they served. His reply was "The sugar dish". He continued "Typically when you find a sugar dish with only pink and white packets, you will get a mediocre meal at best. When they have pink, white and blue you will get a decent meal. But when the sugar dish has pink, white, blue and yellow then you get a fantastic meal". We asked if he was kidding, he answered "No". He followed his statement by saying "Sugar or sugar substitutes is one of the least expensive things a business / restaurant can offer it's customers and if they are willing to cut corners there, then they are willing to cut corners in other areas of their business and in the case of restaurants mainly food". Now he did follow up with "This is what I have found to be true most of the time, but not every time".
Now five years later from that day I am always checking restaurants, coffee shops, sugar dishes to see if his theory holds true. To date, what he said has held mostly true.
But as a business owner, I realized EVERY business has a "Sugar Dish". Something that is in front of the customer, whether it be a product, a storefront, a website etc that can reflect if we as a business cut corners to save a little money and not providing the best we can for our customers.
So the challenge I offer to you, and myself, is to determine what is your company's "Sugar Dish" and what does it say about your business to your customers?
If you would be kind enough to visit what I believe to be our Sugar Dishes, our Facebook Page, Our LinkedIn Page, and our Website and let me know what our sugar dishes say to you about our business. Thank you and Much Success!
