REAL ESTATE TRENDS...Are prefabs the answer to affordability in the Bay Area?

Prefabricated homes, like so many things in modern America, have been rebranded and given a new lease on life. Now known as manufactured homes, the properties could play a part of the affordability solution in the Bay Area.

The Mercury News tells the story of a young couple who were priced out of their rented apartment and found that they were able to afford a manufactured home of their own.

The three-bed, two bathroom home is located on a mobile home park in Sunnyvale, but is anything but a typical trailer. The 1,370-square-foot home has a 14-foot cathedral ceiling in the master bedroom and a spacious kitchen and has allowed the couple to think about starting a family.

The price; $219,000. Not bad at all in an area where the median is $782,000.

However, one issue with manufactured homes though is the lack of supply with many mobile home parks closing because owners can make more by selling to housing developers.
